Dean Durber recently
completed his PhD in the Department of Communication and Cultural Studies at
Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. His thesis considers the
silencing of non-homosexual male-male sexualized intimacies within the
discourse of gay liberation. He also holds a Master of Arts in Theatre
Studies from the University of New South Wales (Sydney) and a Bachelor of
Arts in Chinese and Japanese Studies from the University of Leeds (UK). He
currently lectures and writes in the areas of queer sexualities, media
studies, gender studies, and drug cultures. His first novel, Johnny, Come Home (Marginal Eyes
Press, 2002), has been described as having "one of the most offensive,
sex-starved, possibly delusional and amazingly fucked-up narrators our
homebred literature has seen in recent years." His short stories have
appeared in anthologies such as Best
Gay Erotica 2003 (Cleis Press, 2002) and Straight? Volume 2 (Alyson, 2003). He
is a regular contributor to the cruisingforsex.com website, and is in the
process of constructing his own website at http://www.deandurber.com. Dean is widely traveled
and has spent lengthy periods working, studying, and traveling in Australia,
China, Japan, Taiwan and the UK. He speaks Japanese, Chinese, and German. He
is the recipient of the 1999 Elaine Kemp and Wayne Roberts National Award for
Bisexual Activism. In May 2003, Dean stood for election in his local city
council on an anti-war, anti-detention of refugees
platform. He managed to steal 13% of the vote from the conservative
incumbent.
